Most people use ChatGPT for the wrong things. They ask it to write something important, get a generic answer, and conclude it is overrated. Meanwhile the real time savings sit in the small stuff: the email you rewrite four times, the meeting notes, the plan you keep putting off.

Here are ten prompts for those tasks. Each one is written to be pasted and edited.

1. Turn a mess of notes into a clear summary

"Here are my raw notes from a meeting. Summarise them as: decisions made, open questions, and action items with owners. Keep it under 200 words. Notes: [paste]"

2. Rewrite an email so it lands better

"Rewrite this email so it is shorter, direct and polite. Keep my meaning. Do not add flattery. Email: [paste]"

3. Reply to something difficult

"I received the message below and I am frustrated. Draft a calm, professional reply that states my position clearly without being defensive. Message: [paste]"

4. Break a vague task into steps

"I need to [task]. Break this into the smallest sensible steps, in order, and mark which single step I should do first today."

5. Find the holes in your own thinking

"Here is my plan. Argue against it. Give me the three strongest objections and what would have to be true for the plan to fail. Plan: [paste]"

6. Compare options honestly

"I am choosing between [A] and [B] for [purpose]. Give me a short comparison of trade-offs, then tell me which you would pick for someone whose priority is [priority], and why."

7. Explain something at the right level

"Explain [topic] to me as if I understand [what you already know] but nothing beyond that. Use one concrete example. No analogies about cars."

8. Prepare for a conversation

"I have a conversation with [person] about [subject]. List the questions they are most likely to ask, and a one-line honest answer to each."

9. Clean up a document

"Proofread this for spelling, grammar and clumsy phrasing. Change as little as possible. Show me a list of what you changed and why. Text: [paste]"

10. Plan a week that is actually doable

"Here is everything on my plate this week and roughly how long each takes. I have [hours] of focused time. Tell me what fits, what does not, and what to drop. List: [paste]"

The habit that makes all of them better

Give context before you give the task. The difference between a useless answer and a good one is almost always missing information, not a missing magic phrase.

So tell it who you are, who the output is for, what tone you want, and what you do not want. "Write a product description" gets you filler. "Write a product description for a digital guide about dog training, aimed at first-time owners, calm and practical tone, no exclamation marks, around eighty words" gets you something usable.

Then push back. The first answer is a draft, not a result. Say what is wrong with it and ask again. Two rounds of that beats any single clever prompt.
