Ask anyone who has dated recently and you will hear the same complaint. The apps are broken, nobody is serious, everyone is rude, it is all a waste of time.

Some of that is fair. The apps are designed to keep you swiping, not to get you off them. But most of what makes dating exhausting is not the platform. It is a handful of habits, and those you can change this week.

Volume is the trap

The instinct is to swipe on everyone and sort it out later. It feels efficient. What it actually produces is forty half-conversations, none of which go anywhere, and a growing sense that nobody is worth meeting.

Try the opposite. Be genuinely selective, then put real effort into the few. Five thoughtful conversations beat fifty that die after "hey how's your week".

Your profile is doing the wrong job

Most profiles try to appeal to everyone, which means they say nothing. Loves travel, food and laughing. So does everybody.

A good profile does the opposite. It gives someone something specific to react to and quietly filters out people who would not suit you. Name the actual thing. The particular hobby, the strange opinion, the way you spend a Sunday. Being slightly divisive works far better than being universally acceptable.

Same for photos. One clear photo of your face, one that shows you doing something you actually do, one with other people. No sunglasses in every shot.

Move to a real meeting sooner

The longest conversations often produce the worst dates. Two weeks of messaging builds a version of the person in your head, and the real one never matches it. It also gives both of you plenty of time to lose interest.

A few days of messaging, then suggest something short and easy. A coffee, a walk. Sixty to ninety minutes, easy to extend if it is going well, easy to end if it is not. The three hour dinner on a first date is a commitment neither of you has earned yet.

Say what you want, early

People avoid this because it feels heavy. So they spend four months with someone who wanted something entirely different, which is far heavier.

You do not need a speech. One honest sentence early on about what you are looking for saves months. If it scares someone off, it saved you the months.

Rejection is mostly not about you

Someone stops replying and you assume you did something wrong. Usually they got busy, met someone else, or were never really available. You will rarely find out, and trying to find out costs you more than the answer is worth.

Treat it as data with no story attached. The alternative is taking every silence personally, which is what makes people bitter, and bitterness shows up on the next date whether you mention it or not.

Take breaks on purpose

If dating starts to feel like a second job, it will show. Delete the apps for a fortnight. Come back when you actually want to meet someone rather than because you feel behind.

The people who do well at this are not the most attractive or the most charming. They are the ones who stayed pleasant to be around because they never let it grind them down.

The Modern Dating Master Playbook covers profiles, first messages, first dates and the awkward conversations, with scripts and worksheets for each stage.
